CHANGE IMAGE COLORS

A lot of the UD/PC911 cancer fighters like to use a Signature or an Avatar in the UD/PC911 forum to let everybody know how many UD points they have earned.

But, sometimes the Sig or Avatar you need is a color you don't like or clashes with something else in your post.

Today I am going to show you how to change the color of that Sig or Avatar very easily with a program called Irfanview.

Here is the current Signature for the Arkies:

Heh,heh, a fair
                                    amount of points.

It is an odd color and I really don't like it very much.

My favorite color is blue, so I am going to change the color to some shade of blue.

As mentioned, the program I am going to use is Irfanview.

Irfanview can be downloaded here.

Irfanview is freeware and under a megabyte in size.

It's is a great image viewer and much, much more.

I highly recommend it.

--------------------------------------------------
The first thing to do to change the color of an image is to open it in Irfanview by double-clicking on the image icon which, by default, looks like this:

Colorful, isn't
                                    it.

When opened in Irfan view, the image looks like this:

Irfanview
                                    image opened.

Irfanview is similar to Windows in that there is usually more than one way to do things, including changing the color of an image.

--------------------------------------------------
One way is to use the "Swap Colors" option. To do that, open your image in Irfanview and click on the "Image" button. Then point your mouse cursor to "Swap Colors" on the Image drop-down menu. Now click on the "RGB-> GBR" option, as below:

Swapping
                                    colors.

In the case of our 900,000 Signature, the color is changed to a pretty blue:

Blue signature.

Each option listed in the Swap Colors menu will change your image to a different color. It's fun to play around with them to see what color you can come up with.

When you get a color you like, click on "File", then "Save As", choose a file download destination from the "Save In" drop-down menu, type in a file name, choose your file type from the "Save as type:" drop-down menu, and then click "Save" and you are done.

--------------------------------------------------
Another way to change your image color is by using the "Enhance Colors" option in Irfanview. To do that, open your image in Irfanview, click on the "Image" button and then click on the "Enhance colors" option on the Image drop-down menu, as below:

Enhance
                                    image.

The "Enhance Colors" window will appear, as below:

Enhance
                                    Color Window.

To change your image color just move the sliders around until you get what you want. The original image is on the left and the new image is on the right.

Below is a nice bright red color obtained by moving a couple of sliders:

Enhance
                                    Color Red.

When you get the color you want, click on "Apply to original image", "OK", "File", "Save as" and "Save." Next a small window will popup asking if you want to replace the original file, as below:

Replace
                                    file?.

Click "Yes" and you are done.

--------------------------------------------------
Irfanview has a few more options for changing image colors on the Image drop-down menu.

The "Convert to greyscale" option will change the image to just "black-and-white".

The "Negative" option will change the colors to their opposites. This can have interesting effects.

The "Palette" is fun to play with. You can change one color at a time or use the information to make a transparent gif.

------------------------------------------------
Hope this little tutorial helps someone out.

Crunch on.

HOW TO JOIN THE ARKIES CANCER-FIGHTING SUBTEAM.

If you are using Linux, a Mac, or Windows 95 then you will not be able to run UD. Also, you need to run an 800x600 resolution on your monitor and you need somewhere around 48mb of memory installed in your computer. You will also need a Pentium class processor or above.

---------------------------------------------------

First you have to go to United Devices Download page to download the UDagent. Once there, click on the "Download Now" button illustrated below.

Download the UDAgent

Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, it won't take very long for the download.

I'm ashamed to admit that it just took me 9 minutes and 57 seconds to download the UDagent.

I am connected to a very slow dialup connection.

The name of the file is ud_agent_setup.exe and is about 1.5 megabytes in size.

It will look like this:

ud_agent_setup.exe

-----------------------------------------------

Now that you have the file downloaded, the next step is the installation.

Unless you are running the original first edition of Wuindows 98, you should not have any problems.

Find the UDagent file you just downloaded and doubleclick it to start the installation.

The "Welcome to the United Devices Agent Setup Wizard" window will appear, as below:

United
                                    Devices Agent Setup Wizard
Click "Next", which I outlined in red above.

--------------------------------------------------

Next the "License Agreement" window will appear as below:

License Agreement

Click the "I accept" radio buttun to put a black dot in it, as I have outlined in red above.

Next, click "Next", also outlined in red above.

--------------------------------------------------

Now the "Select Installation Folder" will appear, as below:

Select
                                    Installation Folder

Unless you want to install UD somewhere else, click "Next", as outlined in red above.

--------------------------------------------------

The next window to appear is the "Connection Type for the United Devices Agent", as below:

Connection
Type for the United Devices Agent

I clicked the "Modem(56Kbps)". Click whichever speed applies to you to put a black dot in it as I did above. When finished, click "Next" once again.

--------------------------------------------------

The "Confirm Installation" window will appear next, as below:

Confirm
                                    Installation

Click "Next" when you are ready.

--------------------------------------------------

A window will appear that shows the install progress. It will disappear as quickly as it appeared.

--------------------------------------------------

Then the "Install Complete" window will appear, as below:

Install
                                    Complete

Click "Close" when you are ready.

---------------------------------------------------

The "United Devices Registration" window will appear, as below:

United
                                    Devices Registration

At this time you may be told that you need to reboot. If so, go ahead and reboot, and the "United Devices Registration" window will reappear after the reboot.

The first thing to do on the "United Devices Registration" window is to click where it says "Click here if you are an existing member".

There will now be a check mark in the box and the "United Devices Registration" window will look like this:

United
                                    Devices Registration

Now you can fill in the information.

Type "Arkies" in the "Member Name" box.

Next type the password in the "Password" box.

Sorry, but you will have to contact me for the actual password. Click here to send me an email.

In the "Give this this UD Agent a name" window, type in whatever name you like. I used dubber71903. That's my name plus the date.

Before you do anything else you will have to connect to the Internet.

After connecting to the Internet, click on the "Login" button in the "United Devices Registration" window.

-----------------------------------------

The main UDAgent main page will now appear, as below:

United
                                    Devices Agent Main Page

As you can see it has started an 800,928 byte download.

If you look at the Taskbar at the bottom of your computer screen, you will see what looks like a blue bug or pill. That is the UD icon. That tells you that UD is running.

------------------------------------------

When this download finishes the UD main page will look like this:

United Devices
                                    Main Page
You are now doing Cancer research on your computer.

You will not have to go to the Team UD/PC911 home page to join the team. You are already a member.

To minimize the UD main window, click the button in the bottom right-hand corner of the window. It has a downward pointing arrow on it.

Now there are several things I could mention about UD, but I am going to limit it to just a few things.

1. By default, UD will install the UD screensaver on your computer. If you don't want it, right click your Desktop, click "Properties", click the Screensaver Tab, and select whichever screensaver you want to use, if any, from the drop-down screensaver list. Click "Apply" and then "OK".

2. If you have some questions about UD, try clicking the Help button on the UD main page. You can get the page to come up by double-clicking the Blue egg in your systray. The help button is the one with the question mark on it.

3. Come visit your fellow teammates by going to the UD/PC911 Forum . Your teammates will be glad to meet you and help you any way they can. Don't be shy!

4. If you look at the UD icon (the blue bug) in your systray and see a flashing Yellow exclamation mark, that means that UD has completed a job and is waiting patiently for you to connect to the Internet to turn in the information for that work unit.

5. For some general UD information, and some UD links to check out, go to the top of this page and click on "United Devices/Grid.Org".

Thanks for joining the Arkies, Team UD/PC911, and UD.
